Intercoastal Gulf Coast Elevated Home Architecture In The Galveston Bay Area

Exploring Modern Coastal Design for Elevated Home in Galveston Bay Area

The Typical Approach

In the Galveston Bay area, many properties are in the flood plain, requiring elevated homes. The conventional approach involves driven wood pilings and wood framing, resulting in cute elevated cottages with pastel color palettes, white trims, and raw ground levels. This approach has its merits and keeps costs manageable, but it's not the only option available.

Le Corbusier's Influence

As a long-time Le Corbusier fan, I've been exploring how his principles of architecture could be applied to modern coastal homes. Le Corbusier's five principles included pilotis, roof gardens, open floor plans, long ribbon windows, and open facades - all concepts that could be easily adapted to coastal homes today.

A Coastal Interpretation of Le Corbusier's Approach

My approach to modern coastal design involves incorporating Le Corbusier's design elements while addressing the challenges of elevated homes. For example, while most of his designs were clad in stucco, I'm using sidings that allow for movement as all elevated homes will have some movement. A stucco finish would crack over time.

A New Vision for an Elevated Home

By combining the modernist approach with a coastal interpretation, we can create a new vision for elevated homes that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. At Kennedy Architecture LLC, we are dedicated to serving our clients with excellently designed homes that stand the test of time.

Example of Le Corbusier's Influence

I am calling this design style "intercoastal"... paying homage to early international style.

Others to come.
